Darren Mitchum has served as Sheriff of Twiggs County since January 1, 2005. His office serves residents from its headquarters in Jeffersonville, Georgia.[1]
Serving Twiggs County
Sheriff Mitchum’s published mission centers on fairness, compassion, respect, and equal service under the law. His welcome message invites residents to contact him or his staff with questions and suggestions about how the office can better serve the community.
Before becoming Twiggs County’s sheriff, Mitchum worked with the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office. The Courier Herald’s January 2025 coverage of a memorial for Deputy Kyle Dinkheller identifies him as a member of that agency in 1998.[2]
Leadership by example
In a July 2016 interview with WGXA, Mitchum described a practical approach to leadership: working alongside deputies and helping cover patrol or jail shifts when needed. He also emphasized honesty and transparency in the operation of a law enforcement agency.[3]
That interview highlighted the Sheriff’s Office training range, built in 2009. Mitchum told WGXA that donated land, drug-seizure funds, and work by Sheriff’s Office personnel helped make the facility possible without a cost to taxpayers.[3]
“You've got to be out front, you've got to set the example.”
— Sheriff Darren Mitchum, WGXA interview, July 7, 2016.[3]

The resolution also records national traffic-safety awards from the International Association of Chiefs of Police and state recognition from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, including occupant-protection and child-passenger-safety awards.
